An Overview of Corneal Procedures
The cornea is the transparent outer layer at the very front of your eye that helps to focus light. If the cornea is damaged by disease or injury, certain procedures can help restore its function and improve your vision.
Corneal Transplant: A corneal transplant, or keratoplasty, is a surgical procedure to replace a damaged or diseased cornea with healthy corneal tissue from a donor. This procedure can restore vision, reduce pain, and improve the appearance of a damaged cornea.
Corneal Cross-Linking (for Keratoconus): Keratoconus is a condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge outwards into a cone shape, leading to distorted vision. Corneal cross-linking is a minimally invasive treatment designed to strengthen the corneal tissue and stop the condition from progressing. The procedure involves applying special vitamin B2 (riboflavin) eye drops to the cornea, which is then activated by a controlled amount of ultraviolet (UV) light. This process creates new "links" between the collagen fibers in the cornea, making it stronger and more stable.
